How the 2017 Kia Sedona Became a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS

What would you consider the most important aspect of a family vehicle? For most people, reliability and dependability are important, of course, but the safety of their family is paramount.

If this sounds like you, you’ll want to learn more about the 2017 Kia Sedona‘s Top Safety Pick+ rating, recently awarded by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This is the highest possible rating from the IIHS, and is an upgrade from the rating the Sedona was given last year.  Increased safety features, especially the Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system, earned the 2017 Sedona the improved rating.

What Does the TSP+ Rating Mean?

In order to earn the prestigious TSP+ rating, a vehicle has to pass all of the IIHS’s tests with flying colors. The tests look at two things –not only how a vehicle withstands a crash, but also how it prevents crashes. For the TSP+ rating, the vehicle has to earn a high rating for its ability to prevent head-on collisions, as well as good ratings in five crash tests measuring passenger safety during head-on collisions, side collisions and rollovers.

Last year’s Sedona scored a “basic” rating in front crash prevention, naming it a Top Safety Pick. With the addition of the Autonomous Emergency Braking system, the 2017 Sedona’s front crash prevention was upgraded to “superior,” the highest possible rating, making it a Top Safety Pick+ vehicle.

Safety Features on the 2017 Kia Sedona

There’s no better way to protect your family against a front-end crash than Kia’s AEB system. The AEB not only warns the driver of an impending collision, but also applies the brakes to avoid the crash if the driver does not act in time.

In addition, the 2017 Sedona has a number of other safety features, such as the Lane Departure Warning and Blind-Spot Detection systems. The minivan’s many safety systems have earned it recognition before, such as when the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration gave it a five-star crash rating in 2015.
